As the weather becomes colder please make sure children have appropriate gear for lunch recess. We go to recess at 10:45 and it is still very chilly. Please label coats, hats, gloves, etc to the best of your ability!

Reader’s will…

• break words into parts
• pay special attention to the beginning of words
• watch out for endings
• don't let vowels trip them up
• solve mystery words with vowel teams 

Writer’s will…

• use diagrams and labels to teach
• be brave enough to spell fancy and specific words
• use our partners to help us see what doesn't make sense
• set new goals using a checklist
• edit for spelling, punctuation, and capitalization 

Mathematicians will…

• be introduced to 10 groups
• explore teen numbers using the secret code cards
• represent and compare teen numbers
• complete a math exemplar in small groups

In science we will continue to explore animals and their adaptations. We will look closely at how animals survive in the winter.

You need a bag. In your bag you need a mask and a helmet, a glove and a rain jacket in case it rains. (Teaching all about Softball)

There are different types of dance. The different types of dance are jazz, tap, contemporary, ballet, tap, and there is something called acro. Acro is a stretch class. (Teaching all about Dance)

Lake Orion Book Drive: Do you have outgrown or unread books clogging up your shelves at home? You can put those books into the hands of young readers by donating them to the annual Lake Orion book drive! Simply bring ANY used or new books, from infant to adult, to the collection bin at your child's school. Staff will collect and sort donations and Preschool through 12^th grade teachers will be invited to select books for classroom use. Books not adopted into classrooms will be donated to local literacy programs. Our book drive has placed thousands of books in to the hands of Lake Orion students over the years! Bring books anytime now through November 28.  Thank you and happy reading!

Conferences: I look forward to seeing you next week for parent teacher conferences. If you cannot make your time or need to reschedule please let me know ASAP. Please knock when you are here, if it is your exact time, to keep me on track. I will ask you to write your child a compliment on his or her published piece of writing that is hanging outside our door either before while you are waiting for your conference or after when your conference has finished.

The photos below show friends working on a math exemplar. This is a math challenge that requires higher level thinking. I read students the story problem below and got them started and they then worked in small groups to figure out the answer. They proved their answer with drawings and explained their thinking in front of the class. 

Problem:

 Frog and Toad want to plant a garden. They have 5 tomato plants, 6 pepper plants, 7 onion plants, and 6 corn plants. there is only room for 6 plants in each row. how many rows will Frog and Toad need in the garden?

-inquire how readers know when they need to go back and fix things up

-think about the whole book and ask, “what would make sense?”

-think about what they already know about a topic to help them solve tricky words

-ask themselves “what sounds right?”

This week in Math students will

-draw math pictures for subtraction equations

-generate their own subtraction story problems

-understand the relationship between addition and subtraction

This week in Writer’s Workshop students will

-use all they know to revise and fix up their writing from the unit

-use a checklist and ask themselves if they “did it like a first grader?”

-add covers and titles to their stories

This week in Science students will investigate pumpkins as we continue to learn about how plants grow. They get to watch a pumpkin being cut open. They will also get to feel the pulp and seeds and record their observations.
