Important Items:

• Reminder that all snacks need to be TREE NUT FREE. This is more than just peanut free. Thank you! 
• First grade at Webber is planning a special activity day on May 24th. In lieu of a traditional field trip, we host a special science immersion day here at Webber featuring Dan the Creature Man. This is a chance for our students to expand on their learning in all areas of the curriculum. We may ask for donation or volunteers as our plans become finalized. Watch for details to come!
• Please send in empty cereal boxes this week and next for your students to publish their second series set in writers workshop. Thank you!

Learning:

In readers workshop students will...

• preview stories to get ready for reading adventures
• use pictures and words to keep track of the setting
• use the story line to predict
• retell to retain the story

In writers workshop students will...

• include chapters and table of contents
• use patterns to help elaborate
• stretch out endings
• have a punctuation party

Mathematicians will...

• explore 2 digit addition
• solve addition with 10's and 1's
• use secret code cards to add

In science students will observe a rainbow through a prism and predict why this happens.

In social studies students will study relative location, human and physical characteristics of places, and how our environment changes.

This week readers will...

• investigate ways to make their reading sound great
• use punctuation to help make their reading sound right
• try reading in different ways to see what fits best
• work with partners to make their reading sound its very best
• celebrate their hard work

This week mathematicians will...

• construct 3D shapes using toothpicks and marshmallows
• order by length
• measure with length units
• create scenes using 2D shapes
• take the unit 7 test

This week writers will...

• celebrate our first series
• investigate what makes realistic fiction realisitc
• show, not tell using tiny details including feelings
• include chapters in their series books
• use partners to help elaborate

This week in science students will find out what different materials allow light through and what materials reflect light

This week in social studies students will explore maps and globes and learn about location.

We Care Wednesday is April 18th- Earth Day is Sunday, April 22^nd. In honor of this, Webber Student Council invites everyone to wear green and blue to represent the colors of the Earth. Monetary donations will be used to purchase a tree to be planted at Webber.

• not just read words but understand words
• use our own words to replace to new words learned
• use everything they know to get the job done quickly

Writers will...

• begin to write series books
• learn the details that go into book 1 of a series
• develop language in their stories
• have a revision party

Mathematicians will...

• look at attributes of squares and triangles
• find equal shapes
• compose 3-d shapes
• make a picture using 2-d shapes

Scientists will continue to learn about light and shadows.

In social studies we will begin to learn about mapping.

• work to understand why we re-read
• make movies in their minds to picture what's happening
• act out stories to understand

• write beginnings that have action and dialogue or feelings
• get serious about spelling
• use a checklist to set goals
• use partners to fix up our writing
• celebrate our best realistic fiction work 

In math students will...

• think about what they do at each hour of the day
• tell and write time in half hours
• practice telling and writing time
• explore squares and rectangles
• explore triangles and circles

March is Reading Month Events

• Wacky Wednesday, March 28 - Dress as your favorite Book Character day
• Students will meet a K-9 Unit dog and handler on Thursday
• We will be watching Secret Life of Pets on Thursday as a wrap up to our MIRM fun. This movie is rated PG. If you do not want your child watching this please email me as soon as possible. 
• We will have our Last "Furry Friend" Reading on Wednesday March, 28th. 

Students have a half day of school on Thursday 3/29 and No school on Friday 3/30. Spring Break is from Friday 3/30-Friday 4/6. 

Week of 3/19...

March is Reading Month (Week of March 19-23)

• On Friday, 3/23 we will have a classroom Read-in ‘Paw’ty. Students can wear pajamas, bring in their favorite stuffed pet and enjoy a ‘Doggy Bag” of treats which will be provided! 
• Students will get to meet a therapy dog on Tuesday
• Wacky Wednesday, March 21 - College Day 

Learning This Week

Readers will...

• think about the story to problem solve tricky words
• keep track of whats happening in their story and retell
• think about what kind of word would fit when they're stuck

Writers will...

• write a review of a place to eat, a place to visit, a movie to see, and a toy to buy
• create class anthologies 
• immerse into realistic fiction 

Mathematicians will...

• look at math in real world situations
• review comparison bars
• take their unit 6 test (will come home next week)
• take their quarter 3 asssessment

In social studies students will learn about more great leaders this week - Martin Luther King Jr., Susan B. Anthony, and Helen Keller.
