News for 3/4

Notes from Ms. Rau
  • Engineering Inspired by Nature:  Over the past several weeks in science we have explored the question “How do animals’ bodies and behaviors help them survive?” As part of this unit, students learned about adaptations such as claws, horns, and shells that help animals to protect themselves. This week students will learn what they know about animal adaptations to design a safety item that would help to protect a human.  We have building supplies such as cardboard, tape, aluminum foil, and fabric scraps available. Students are welcome to bring in other materials on Tuesday or Wednesday to use for building their inventions. Please do not send anything sharp or breakable, but students may appreciate materials such as paper, plastic wrap, Styrofoam, small plastic or cardboard containers, or other craft supplies, depending on what they plan to make. You can send supplies for your child’s specific project or for the class to share; just make sure your child knows the plan for the items. We will do all of the building, testing, and rebuilding in class and develop our understanding of how engineers create solutions and solve problems.  The prototypes will be on display for the Discovery Fair.
